Horde of Ghosts
12:17
|

You weren’t watching
as I slept through peacetime
and I couldn’t see
as I crushed you in the dark
I knew you were there,
but I lacked the courage
to pull you out of the smoke.
Instead I shrugged
as you were led away in chains.
They are always behind me
a horde of ghosts, with yellow eyes
to remind me of my failure
and why we live in fog and fear.

Industry’s open arms gave me a place to hide.
Perhaps, as God intended, at the expense of my compassion.
I fell apart in the glow of your lurid star.
I knew only one bitter verse,
a screed of wealth
(to make us small, to turn our backs)
that no man would ever write.
“Serve one’s self, with blind eyes.”
No one man moves the world.
With or without him
the day begins the same
though through his wisdom
he may move me.
Your family will say that you are lost,
that the road crumbled behind you.
Say to them,
“I have found a path of right action,
and though it will cost me,
I will survive it in spite of you,
because it was a privilege to live this way.”

Cloudbreather
10:23
|
|||
I was wounded
with a hymn caught in my throat.
You taught me a song I could never sing alone.
Though I am poison, it was another beast
Who hid your tired heart from view.
Tell me again that I did not cause you heartache;
that I should run, before you remember
It takes no courage to kill a wounded animal,
only a rod in a calloused hand.
You searched my breath for relief
a shelter in hell, to hide from life’s perils.
I awoke in the failure of your arms,
to hide again, in hours of rapture.
Had I better judgment, I’d remove the thorn,
to live without you, at peace.
You were my Saint
all of the things I forgot to be.
I came like all the others
to tell you I love you
and whisper plague in your ear.
